[GT Navs] Fwd: Bone Marrow Search

Begin forwarded message:

Subject: Bone Marrow Search
Date: April 8, 2015 at 7:41:07 PM EDT
To: Chad Wesley Spalinger <chad.spalinger@gatech.edu>
From: "Norris, Samuel A" <samuel.norris@gatech.edu>

Chad,

I just got the following message on Theta Xi's email list. I was wondering if you could forward this to the Navigators list. If anyone thinks they know of a match or would like to be tested Saturday or another time, please let me know. I have removed the names from the message.

"A friend of one of our alumni has been diagnosed with metastatic hepatosplenic non-hodgkins lymphoma. It's a rare cancer and he only has months to live unless they can find a match for a bone marrow transplant. He is only 44 years old and has 2 kids. It's a tragic situation. There will be an event this Saturday with a silent auction, live music and free beer and wine for those of age. We will be swabbing attendees to try to find a match. I realize it's short notice. I really need your help reaching out to a small community.
The man's ancestry is from Haiti and Ghana. Finding a match will be difficult. If we know anyone of that descent please put me in contact  with them. If anyone is in contact with churches that have high memberships of those ethnicities please give them my contact information. Please reach out to the African American Greek community at Tech on my behalf."

Finding a donor match can be difficult. Please let me know if you can be of assistance.

Thanks,

Sam Norris

[GT Navs] Future Leadership and Near Future Events

Hey Navigators,

Here's an exciting note about future ministry leadership. I'm pleased to announce that the following people have been recommended by both this year's Compass Team and the Staff Team to serve on the 2015-2016 Compass Team:

All four of these people have been asked and have prayerfully accepted their nominations. Tomorrow night (April 9th) at NavNight we will hold a vote to affirm these nominations as a group. So please make it a priority to be at this NavNight tomorrow to cast your vote!

Also here are some more key dates to be aware of:

Thursday April 16th – Leadership Transition @ NavNight – Former Campus Director Donnie Hoover along with Atlanta Navs leadership will share some history and memories, thank the current compass team, install the new Compass Team, and also officially pass the baton to Ben & Caryn Burchardi. We'll be joined by GT Nav Alums as well.

Saturday April 18th – 9AM to 12PM – Location TBD - Future Leader Meeting – This is for anyone and everyone who wants to lead within or through The Navigators in the upcoming school year. We'll talk about vision, strategy, hopes and dreams, and opportunities for service will be highlighted.

Thursday April 23rd – Sendoff NavNight – Daniel Haney will share a brief message on laboring for the long haul. Then we will recognize and pray for all of our Seniors and our EDGE Corps Staff, Jordan Ridge, as they transition from GaTech to what's next.

Subject: 3000 13 Resources

3000 13 Challengers,

Good evening, sisters and brothers! I hope that today already has you with sore arms and a heart filled with the Word. As we're embarking on this journey as a family, I'd like to encourage everyone and provide some resources to help out. To make it through this we really need to keep each other accountable and stick to it! I've attached some resources that I hope will be helpful in both the physical and spiritual aspects of this challenge.

PSA from the pre-med in me: Though we joke and get hyped about it, this truly isn't a simple or even necessarily safe task. Remember, pushing yourself in exercise (and in life) is how you grow, but you have to KNOW YOUR LIMITS! If you are feeling pain or discomfort that is unreasonable, please STOP and don't hurt yourself. The last thing we want is someone leaving this experience with a long-term injury. Remember that the real heart behind this is the spiritual training, and that has value in this life and the next.

Some quick math for how to break down the pushups (all approximations):
3000 in 14 days = 215 daily = 44 sets of 5, 22 sets of 10, 15 sets of 15, 11 sets of 20, 9 sets of 25, etc.
3000 in 12 days (2 days off) = 250 daily = 50 sets of 5, 25 sets of 10, 17 sets of 15, 13 sets of 20, 10 sets of 25, etc.

For the verses, I really like the advice in that resource that I've attached. In summary, first read the verse (with reference) 10 times out loud and slowly, pretending like you're taking a picture of each word with your eyes. Next, read the verse (with reference always) out loud 10 times without looking, but double checking to make sure that you're not making mistakes. That should be it for that day, but the biggest step is to keep up with what you've memorized. So the next day, start out with trying to do the old verse from yesterday 10 times from memory, checking when you need to make sure you're doing it properly. The days after, make sure you do all the verses you've learned already at least once by heart. In this way, by the end you'll have all of them down and be able to recite them all from memory in just 2 weeks!  This method should make it only about 10-20 minutes a day to get all the verses down. Most importantly, pray for the Holy Spirit to really give you the strength to do this and keep up with it.

Okay, I know this was an information overload, but wanted to get out as lots of resources to help us start this strong.
Lastly, if you want some extra intensity/variety in pushups:

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me or anyone that has been involved in past years; I really want everyone who undertakes this to finish it well!

Keep up the hard work,
Jordan

And you will say in that day:

"Give thanks to the Lord,
    call upon his name,
make known his deeds among the peoples,
proclaim that his name is exalted.
"Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously;
let this be made known in all the earth.
Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion,
for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel."
